If Gene Lasker had a Lot Less Self-Confidence, and a Little Less Showmanship, He'd be Hulk Hogan

And perhaps, that's part of the winning combination for Lasker.  When he straps into the #02 sprint car, there's never a doubt in his mind that he can win.  And why not?  Since his career began, he has enjoyed a series of goals set and achieved through hard work, persererance and perhaps the occasional psyche-job.

Lasker Doesn't Shy Away from His Competition

As a matter of fact, he revels in the pre-race conversation.  And, that too is part of Gene Lasker's winning plan.  He's his own toughest critic.  And when you've just told your competitors that you're taking the checkers, you damn well better push yourself to take the checkers.  He's taken the checkers over and over again, as in his 14 feature wins at East Bay in 1997!

You'll see it when you find him at one of the many charity events where he brings out his race cars and hauler to make appearance and give his time.  Whether it's on the track or for a worthy cause, there's only one thing on his mind...winning!

Gene Lasker Started Driving Sprint Cars in 1989

Back then he was driving for Jerry Rod Racing, and Racing with the T.B.A.R.A (Tampa Bay Area Racing Association).  In those days, the T.B.A.R.A. raced on both asphalt and dirt tracks, alternating from week to week.  The drivers in that serious were some of the toughest drivers in the country--like David Steele.  Lasker wond the T.B.A.R.A. Rookie of the Year Award in his first year, and finished 11th in overall points, despite the fact that he only raced for just over half of the season.  He switched rides the next year for his first full season of sprint car racing and took 6th place in overall points.

1991: The Birth of Gene Lasker Racing

During the 1991 season, gene purchased his own equipment and Gene Lasker Racing was formed.  1992, the first full year of racing with his own team, brought feature wins at Ocala Speedway, St. Augustine Speedway, and East Bay Raceway.  For a new team to finish 4th in overall points, 5th in dirt division points, and 5th in the Barfield Dash for Cash was Impressive.  Especially when 76 teams participated that season. 

In 1993, he finished second in overall points for the T.B.A.R.A and was awarded the "Most Dedicated Driver Award" for his efforts in promoting sprint car racing. 

Taking the "Show" on the Road

In 1994, he was the T.B.A.R.A. Dirt Division Champion, again finishing second in overall points.  This only made him push arder to learn more, drive faster, and follow in the footsteps of his mentors, the World of Outlaws.  And so, in 1996, he took to the road.  He ran the entire American Winged Outlaws Southeast Tour.  Gene took checkers in eleven feature on seven different race tracks, in three different states.  He set two track records.  And, he became the 1996 American Winged Outlaws Southeast Division Champion.  From there he came back home for a year and took the local track championship in 1997.

If you haven't seen the #02 in action, you should.  Gene Lasker can hold your attention on or off the clasy.  He's a driver who brings a spark of excitement tot he track, and makes you hold on to your seat.  As with most sucessful drivers, there's fans that love him, and fans that hate him.  But the fact is, if Gene's not there, the show won't be quite as exciting.
